Using the Right Cables at the Office or Home


 

Today’s is a wired world, and computers, smart phones, laptops, and more are central to both everyday life and office work. This means that various Ethernet cable types like Cat5 cables or Cat6 cables are often used to plug into the Internet, and besides the various Ethernet cable types, bulk USB cables and bulk fiber optic cables have their uses, too. Wireless Internet services such as WiFi can be found and have their uses, but various Ethernet cable types are hardly obsolete. In fact, in some applications, a user may prefer the Ethernet cable types over WiFi for Internet security, and this means that this hardware has plenty of customers. Business professionals and private individuals alike have plenty of use for various Ethernet cable types, and HDMI cables are quite useful as well. The Internet is relatively young, and computers have only been in the home in earnest since the 1980s or so. But already, these machines and their cables have proven central to getting a fine days’ work done.

Cables at the Office

A business setting is where someone might find the most dedicated cable networks and setups around. What are cables doing there? One major job for those cables is to connect a large number of computers to the Internet, and many office workers rely on the Internet to get their work done, such as online marketing or sending files to remote workers. WiFi is possible on a smaller scale for this, but on a larger scale, cables are the better choice. Cables can be plugged right into computers and connected to routers, allowing office employees solid access to the Internet. These category 5 and category 6 cables offer secure and smooth connections to the Internet in exchange for the physical clutter of using them, but in nearly all cases, this is certainly worth it. Such cables may be threaded under desks and even through the floor, anywhere they are not a tripping hazard or might get snagged and unplugged.

Cables are useful in the office for data servers as well. For those unaware, a data server is a room full of computers that are all wired together with cables to function as a single, powerful entity. These are no ordinary desktop PCs; they don’t even have monitors or keyboards on them. Instead, they are the “brain” of an office’s computer network, using their combined hard drives and processors to allow all connected PCs to have vast storage space and faster processing power. In fact, the cabinets used to house all these data server PCs have holes in them so that their many cables can be threaded through, and these holes also allow liquid cooling tubes to run through them. Meanwhile, other cables such as USB models will connect those data server computers to the desktop PCs that office workers are using. All of these cables keep the system running.

Cables at the Home

Cables are useful for recreational computer use or home offices as well. Some office employees work remotely, such as on board a private jet during a business trip or even at home. More and more workers today choose to work remotely at home for a number of benefits, such as eliminating commute time and working in a distraction-free zone. But work is work, and these remote employees need to stay connected to their co-workers. Ethernet cables allow them to plug their work computer(s) to the Internet, and they can access Cloud data storage to send and receive files from their co-workers and managers. They can also use these secure Internet connections to use live video chat, such as Skype, to have a virtual presence at meetings. Many managers appreciate how flexible modern tech can be for the office.

Computers and cables can be fun, too. Many homeowners like to build home entertainment centers, which means linking up flat-screen HDTVs, satellite boxes or DVD players, game consoles, a digital projector, or a surround sound system. Cables allow all of these hardware pieces to be linked, so long as all the devices are compatible with certain cable types and each other. Cables should also be arranged so that they’re not a tripping hazard and they won’t get accidentally snagged or unplugged.
